The San Juan County Food System needs locally scaled infrastructure and services to help meet the many obstacles faced by farmers, food producers and residents of its isolated rural community. The pandemic of 2020-2023 clearly exposed the weaknesses and inequities of this situation. Regional studies, US Census statistics, and private industry reports consistently demonstrate the fragility of the county’s economy.
The Lopez Food Center Project will serve as a nexus for farms, food businesses and food organizations, providing storage, distribution, kitchen, retail and business development support to strengthen food system resilience. The San Juan Islands Ag Guild, the Lopez Island Family Resource Center and the San Juan Islands Food Hub are working closely with local food producers to design this Project as an answer to some of the chronic challenges facing our community.
